“I first heard about the Big Red Challenge through Lynn Bartak when I was working at the UPS Store several years ago, and he stopped by to ship the Shield. As my boss and I worked on preparing the shipment, we inquired about the Shield, and Lynn started talking about how they had just completed the first year of the race. Even though I had done a variety of sports growing up, I never considered myself to be a good long distance runner, but Lynn mentioned that there were obstacles in the race, which really piqued my interest and sounded like fun! He left some brochures at the store, and I took one home with me. Similar to myself, no one else in my family was really into running more than a short distance, but I was able to convince my oldest sister to run with me! The race was a blast, and there wasn’t even a question in my mind about doing it the following year. The next year, I ran it again, but this time with my younger sister in addition to my oldest sister. Then the next year, we added my brother, and the year after that, my middle sister. It became a sibling tradition each year, which I really cherished and look back on fondly, as my three sisters have since moved away. Though the race is indeed a challenge, it helped build a sense of confidence when facing intimidating, overwhelming challenges and was a reminder that we are often stronger than we realize. In the moments where we do fail and need help, there is someone close by to offer a hand.

Outside of the course itself, the race supports a worthy cause and addresses an issue that I belief a lot of us face. Though I was never a part of the military, I can identify with the struggle of depression and suicidal thoughts. We all long to feel as though we belong, have purpose, and are loved. I firmly believe that these things can be achieved by a relationship with Jesus, a strong community of uplifting support, and loving family and friends. Big Red Challenge seeks to assist with the difficult transition from military life to civilian life, which is a noble and beautiful thing! I will continue to run each year as long as I am able!”
